Modern farmhouse is an incredibly popular style right now. I recently had the opportunity to work with HomeGoods during their summer social photoshoot here in Massachusetts. If you follow me regularly on Design Happy, you may have seen me share how to decorate a modern farmhouse living room a few weeks ago. In additional to the fabulous living room, I created this modern farmhouse dining room (and then went home and recreated the space in my own dining room).

Wondering how you too can get this look? By following these 7 simple steps, you can achieve the modern farmhouse look in your own home.

Distressed furniture

You will need to start with furniture pieces, such as a cabinet and table, that resemble something that could be hundreds of years old. This can be something you picked up at a yard sale and repainted, or something you bought new and just looks like a family heirloom. Industrial and shaker-style chairs or benches with iron features are also great furniture accents. If you notice, I chose hefty, distressed wooden furniture.

Galvanized or wire elements

Mixing in wire, metal or galvanized elements is key to achieving the modern farmhouse look. The metal clock and cow were perfect accents for this space. I also mixed in copper-plated pitchers and accents on the table.

Worn woods

The distressed wood element is seen throughout this space on the table, the barn door in the background, the hutch and the bench. I remember when I saw the marble and wooden cake stand in the store — I immediately grabbed it knowing it was going to look great on the table.

The tray and bread dish also add warmth and help to tie all of the wood elements together.

Vintage accents

I found these adorable salt and pepper shakers that were distressed copper and looked antique. I also mixed in my great grandmother’s silver sugar and creamer set in the hutch. She would be so pleased to know that I was using her china and it was featured in one of my decorating projects.

Linens

I decided to layer two table runners to create a bit of texture and add a little character. Mixing in simple white napkins with lace trim inside the tray also helped soften the stacked dishes and silverware.

White enamelware or ironware

As you can see, the white enamelware is prevalent not only in the hutch, but on the table, too. Mixing all these key elements together can help you achieve the modern farmhouse aesthetic. Stacked white dishes, bowls and platters help create varying heights on the table and create visual appeal.

And in case you are wondering, 99 percent of everything in this room is from Homegoods — even the fabulous furniture pieces! So what do you think? Are you a fan of this modern farmhouse style? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
